Synopsis

In the Swiss city of Basel, 2 groups fight for supremacy: the Spezi and the Grübler. But when a young Spezi (Juliastrid) and a young Grübler (Romartino) fall in love, the feud threatens to escalate. For their love they have to make a sacrifice that not everyone likes at first…

Film Facts

An animated film especially for the wedding of my sister who got married in 2011 (Astrid and Martin, therefore Romartino & Juliastrid). Complete production time about 8 months. Shot with iStopMotion and a Sony video camera.

The story uses an adaptation of Romeo & Juliet to tell how the bride and groom met.

Logically, the film has been very well received by the bridal couple and the Basel carnival scene, and has a tongue-in-cheek romantic touch.

Fun Facts

In the Basel carnival scene, the cliques (the ones with piccolo and drums) and the Guggenmusik (the ones with drums and trumpets) are usually not on very good terms with each other. Since my sister plays in a clique and her husband plays in a Guggenmusik, a story alluding to Romeo & Juliet seemed like a cool idea. But of course, my story has a happy ending.

Following the maestro William Shakespeare, the film was shot mainly like a play: Simple backgrounds, shots mostly only from the front without big effects and simple sets. The father of the groom mimes the narrator.

The piccolo sounds and people’s reactions, which can be heard again and again, were recorded under false pretenses with a few people from the Spezi clique. None of the participants knew that the recordings would eventually be used for this animated film and were almost as surprised at the wedding as the bride and groom.

For the recordings of the Guggenmusik sounds, my Guggenmusik “Ruinenarre Dornach” at that time kindly made itself available.
