Synopsis
The two campers Chris and Rosy would like to head out for a trip on the lake with their boat. But how do they get to the boat that sits on the top of their camping van?
Film Facts
The first episode in the GONE CAMPING series. After the trailer and the teaser I wanted to tell a longer story and this again with a lot of humor. I hope I succeeded.
For the complete project from script to completion I worked about 7 months. This includes of course the editing as well as the dubbing with the music and sound effects I produced myself. For the first time in a long time I added sound effects to a film and realized once again how exhausting it can be to add a sound effect to every step at the right time.
There is an incredible amount of visual effects on display in this film. For the first time ever, I have Lego men jumping in the air or things flying through the air. Depending on the setting, the water is also a visual effect. And very often I shot the sky as a blue screen and replaced it with better background (for example, with a picture of a cloudy sky from Sweden, where I was on vacation the year before).
Fun Facts
After assembling the camper, we wondered how someone would actually get the boat off the roof, since there is no ladder or anything on the camper to get on the roof. That’s how the idea for the story of the film was born.
There were many spontaneous ideas that were not originally in the script. For example, it wasn’t planned that Chris himself kicks the stone into the water, against which the two crash into in the end. The idea came during the animation and completes the story arc perfectly.
Also very spontaneous ideas were:
- Chris’ hair gets messed up when he puts on his vest
- the airport paddles in Chris’ hands while unloading the boat.
The construction site should actually be in the background whenever the camera is looking in that direction. But you don’t see it until it is actually shown.
When the camera looks up at the boat behind the two figures, the camper is actually about 5-10 centimeters higher than the minifigures. This created the illusion that the boat is very high up.
The scene on the lake when a whale swims under the boat was also a spontaneous idea and was inspired by a scene in the movie “Life of Pi”. It took about 1.5h for the animation and about 15 hours for the post production with visual effects. But it was worth it…
The model for the concept, the mood and the humor of the GONE CAMPING series is the stop motion series “Shaun the Sheep” by Aardman Animation.
